Workings of the Conscience
Lesson 2
Conscience is formed in the disparity between the
middle self and the high self. We are speaking now of the conscious mind and
the Holy Spirit.
When there is no genuine commitment to the high
self, the disparity between the two minds is too great for spiritual power
(grace) to pass between them. The conscious mind attaches instead to the lower
(subconscious or animal) self. The subconscious is thus shackled to and dragged
along by the pressures of the outer world. The whole movement is downward
instead of upward.
You must separate the conscious mind from the subconscious if you are to gain
control over your body.
The Polarizing attitude that brings you to a state of objectivity is a yearning
for righteousness. The love (yearning or need) for the true ground of its being
causes an attraction to and eventually an identification with the most High
self.
The immediate effect of this relationship is a kind of double seeing. Until you
become adjusted you will feel like two people-as though one were looking through
the eyes of the other. From here there is a new dimension to your seeing. You
perceive (observe) as well as see with your (brutish) eyes. You are also given
to understand what you hear.
You can see people for what they are; you can read
out subtle motives before you are hurt or become involved. You are separated
from the wrong people as if there were an invisible wall between your worlds so
that you cannot share their troubles and they cannot share your joy.
By sharing the identity of the high self you also
share authority over the evils operating in your mind and outside in the world.
Vanity is the opposite (magnetic) polarity. The proud, ambitious, willful,
conscious self repels the advances of the high self. It erects a barrier like a
force field against being made aware (conscious) because it must then also be
aware of its faults and the futility of its vain goals. It must also see what
vanity dares not see-its actual enslavement to evil forces that pretend to
serve and uphold its pride.
So instead of identifying with the high intuitive
self, the conscious mind is attracted into and becomes subject to, dependent
upon, and eventually identifies with, the forces that shape it.
Indeed, the mental world of the subconscious is the
first refuge for the proud conscious mind, a place to escape from guilt and the
terror of ever knowing the truth. For the ego that aspires to immortality,
death can hold great terror since it identifies with the flesh self that will soon
disintegrate at the grave.
There is a right and a wrong way to experience the
images in the mind of the subconscious self. If he is searching and coming
closer to truth, the sincere soul is in the process of becoming more and more
objective to what is going on inside his head. He slowly begins to understand
what is wrong with him. He inherits the means to modify thoughts and desires.
