NOTHING
is harder to do than to make an alcoholic face the fact that he has a drinking
problem or to convince a fat person that he has a problem. Now it is common
medical knowledge that alcohol and eating are not really causes, they are the
symptoms of something much deeper.
Giving
up eating or drinking is painful because doing so will unveil the underlying
cause that threatens the ego; some past sin, shame or failure the ego is
denying. It is possible not only to drink to forget the guilt of drinking or the
disgusting things done in a drunken fit but also to eat to forget the sins
that slip through our gluttony.
Surely
if eating and drinking are a denial of our faults (the same thing as denying
the saving grace of Truth), just as surely then do we set ourselves up to
commit more sins (to deny) and if that is true then we shall just as surely be
committed to the only means we know to deny the truth of those mistakes; eating
to forget the guilt of eating and drinking to forget the guilt of drinking;
this is the poison of forgetfulness.
If
it is possible for an alcoholic to drink to deny the truth then that poison
which denies reality, the very truth which has the power to redeem him from the
past sin, sets him up for the next trauma. Gluttony and drink then represent
rebellion and stubborn pride.
What
I am trying to say is that alcohol can be a second-stage denial of something
gone wrong further back and forgotten and results in bigger sin out of drink
and denied through drinking. The first problem, the first sin, did not
originate through drink but stubborn sinning led to drinking as a more potent
means of denying the truth of the original sin. Without doubt alcoholism is connected
to an original trauma and I am implying that that trauma was and still is food.
All cultures have the same problem with food and like alcoholics, few realize
it because cultural food is the worst kind of drug.
Our
problem with food has led to every problem we have ever had and ever will
have; it has led also to the use and abuse of ever stronger means of denial for
dealing with evolving guilt's and problems.
