Common sense, rare as it has become in our time, should not have to be explained in esoteric terms, as a kind of mystique. It is a simple fact in the life of man as God has created him, our birthright, common to all of us, just as we say it is when we use the words "common sense”. We were all born with it and left alone to build our lives on it, our faith in our innate intelligence would grow to be unshakable. It would become the rock foundation of our lives. Great would be our understanding and great would be our faith in understanding but alas, most of us have been educated out of our common sense by being made to cram our heads with facts in lieu of understanding. Words assail us from all sides, insisting that we forsake the rock of understanding for the shifting sands of facts, even though the "facts" cannot always be proven to be facts.
Most of us have forsaken our common sense to fall under control of the spirit of language and the motivators of the world know it! Whenever you feel a strong need or desire for anything, from a candy to a new car, it behooves you to take a moment to look at that need. Where is it coming from? Is it a real necessity, or are you being willed to want it by a will that is not your will? Stand back and observe your desires as they rise. How often we hear people say "I want that thing so much I can taste it” and how easily we identify with what they are saying! All of us have been excited to greed by skillful appeals to our ego, our pride, our vanity, call it what you will but just don't let it get the upper hand again. As you cultivate the patience to stand back and watch your desires as they arise, you will notice your foolish eagerness subside little by little until it is no more. A good rule of thumb might be: if it excites you, don't buy it; if it would enable you to function more efficiently and you can afford it, buy it.
