GUILT: The Disguised
Blessing
How wonderful it is
to be able to suffer from guilt and self-consciousness!
I know you thought
it was something awful, like a hangover, a ghostly shadow of the past following
you around. You nearly always think your conscience is wrong rather than to see
the error it makes you conscious of. Your pride twists things around to see
them in a more convenient way.
Self-consciousness
is divided into two parts. There is a "big you" on the inside telling
the "little you" that something is wrong. Truly this is a marvelous
thing, and if you had anything like the right sort of inclination to
understand, you would see just how valuable it is.
Your
Friend Within
Think of the
advantage of having an intuitive self that warns you of danger and wishes to
keep you safe and out of trouble. But for some strange reason you think there
is something evil about the Self that makes you conscious of your faults. Where
would you be without a conscience? Isn't that exactly where you are right now?
You may or may not be aware of how lucky you are not to have eluded your
conscience entirely; it's still there, bearing witness to these words.
The only reason you suffer so much is because you just don't listen to what it
has to say.
A rebellious son
naturally prefers to believe that a daddy who chastises him for his own good is
mean and cruel. He especially needs this belief when he is willful and
rebellious, because that little boy's mind is dead set on doing his own thing;
consequently he is mentally blinded to his father's good intentions to protect
him from the dangers that will befall him through his selfishness. This is what
is going on inside each one of us.
Our conscience only
hurts us because we can't or won't listen. That is all! We are like naughty
little boys who are stubborn and willful, prejudiced for the things we want. We
refuse to look at what we are doing with those "friendly" helpers; we
look upon the conscience as a drag, a bother, a bore and an evil.
