Misery
loves company and there's nothing a "wrong" person likes better than
making you just as wrong as he is. "How can you know what chicken tastes
like until you try it?" They wheedle with serpent-like sophistry. If you
are an addict and have subscribed to this type of argument, let's see how you
react to it from the receiving end. Using the same logic, we suggest that you
try the tape, "How Your Mind Can Keep You Well”. After all, how can you
know whether or not it works until you have tried it? You won't try it of
course because it promises to waken you to Reality and you'd rather remain
asleep with your illusions.
The
answer to any rhetorical question is quite simple in that no intelligent
person's thinking has to depend on empirical (experimentally-proven) knowledge.
Any reasonable person knows that he does not have to jump off a cliff to
discover he can't fly and he doesn't have to sample the poison to find out
that it can kill him. What recourse do we have once we're dead? We can't even
shout, "I've got the proof I need!" So don't be taken in by
rhetorical tricks, such as transplanted analogies and examples that have no
application to the realities of the case at hand, for once the acid-heads have
persuaded you to join their ranks, you will find it difficult, if not impossible,
to get away from them and their destructive way of life. While you still can,
take q good look at the way they are going and ask yourself if that's the way
any reasonable person should want to go. The sincerity of your motivation is
the key that unlocks the technology of self-control, so that what you know is
right and reasonable becomes the cogent force that impels your mind and body.
There
are only two kinds of experience: inner and outer. When you don't want to face
the inner truth about yourself, you are forced to escape through some outer
experience that will tell you you're all right just the way you are and the way
you are going. Your hope is to get away from yourself, to adopt a
pseudo-objective stance outside yourself and experience the subtle nuances of
"Reality" that you assume to be revealed only to the understanding of
the user of whatever it is you pin your hopes on. You hope in this way to
arrive at a greater sensitivity to and compassion for people, a greater
insight into the way they think and feel. Sounds marvelous, doesn't it? At
first glance, it seems to be all that any seeker asks of life itself, for the
ultimate goal of a seeker is to find Reality, to transcend the limitations of
his own body and know the freedom (from error) that understanding brings.
