Pride
is man playing God. Playing God involves the soul with the mind, with the
imagination, because only a continuous flow of emotion-based images can
distract us from the terrible guilt of rejecting God to play God.
The
idea that we can be our own God is the source of all conflict in the soul.
Because this idea is at odds with reality, it attracts us into a world of
thought where the soul becomes enslaved to thought, unconsciously fondling and
seeking to realize the lie that originally seduced it, even thoughts of
rebelling are but part of the continuous enslaving stream of thoughts that
inspire and sustain our pursuit of the impossible objective. Once we are
fallen to the realm of imagination, the originator of lies manipulates us
easily. We lose the awareness that would enable us to counter the powerful mis-directions
of temptation. Lost in thought, we literally begin to die to become nothing.
We
have become so lost in the realm of ideas that we have forgotten Truth. Far
removed from reality, enmeshed in worries and dreams, we may not know we are
trying to be our own God. Yet we see ourselves as possessed of God's prerogatives:
worthy of unconditional acceptance and entitled to dispense judgment. We are
obsessed and driven by thoughts of acceptance and rejection, love and hate. We
live in prideful fantasies of being "loved" (worshipped). Judging, we
blame and resent those who reject us and dream of humbling them. We have no
notion as to the source of such ideas. We think we originate them.
The
denial of God is not always hidden and subtle, as in obsessive daydreams of
love and hate. Sometimes it is expressed openly in an outright denial of God's
existence. The professed atheist does not, of course, admit to anyone that he
sees himself as God. No, he is too devious for that. Such an admission would
alienate his listeners and he needs to be heard. The atheist needs others to
support his assertion that there is no God (no other God but him), because no
false idea can stand on its own. Without the reinforcement of a support group,
the ego's self-image as God breaks down. Fantasy that it is, it cannot
withstand the light of Reality.
