Hello,
Roy Masters Speaking
Man:
Roy, I called you last week, and I was about to ask you a question and we ran
out of time.
RM:
All right. Let's see if we can start it up all over again.
Man:
O.K. Well, my problem is that I'm thinking about getting married, but the girl
that I'm thinking of marrying — she treats me very nice and I like her — but
she doesn't have any individuality, and I really place a value on that, but
then I feel that perhaps I could maybe correct this.
RM:
Well, let me ask you a question before we go any further. Why do you respect a
person without any individuality?
Man:
Why do I respect her?
RM:
Yes. Why do you love a girl like that?
Man:
Well, I don't.
RM:
Then why do you want to marry her?
Man:
Well, I was thinking that I could improve it.
RM:
Yes, but (light laughter), alright. It's quite possible that you could stand as
an improvement, but then, in your conversation with me last week, I think you
expressed some concern that your children might come out the same way.
Man:
Right.
RM:
So you also have some fears that this is a possibility.
Man:
Yes. I don't want this to happen in my kids.
RM:
Could it be that you want to marry this woman, not because you respect her, but
because she respects you? For what is not respectable in you as yet?
Man:
She does respect me a great deal.
RM:
Yes, but to be respected by someone who is not "respectable" — if you
know what I mean by that word — how does that flatter you?
Man:
Well, I don't know. The thing is...
RM:
How does it "sit" with you?
Man:
Well, the thing is, she just worships me almost.
RM:
She worships you, doesn't she?
Man:
Yes.
RM:
Doesn't that flatter your ego?
Man:
It does.
