Understanding is living knowledge, the knowledge that quickens the spirit and wakes us to life.
To resolve inner conflict, you must journey again to the source within yourself that you have forgotten and never again doubt that it is there. For it was by making us doubt that the spirit of knowledge replaced our understanding with memories and facts which, though similar, can be opposed to the spirit of understanding in that they lead away from truth to death rather than to life. To take hold of original knowing again you must first realize how you have been tricked into the futility of striving for and compensating with, knowledge.
We should never attempt to impart knowledge to another person by force of will or effort. We should present the facts as clearly as possible but then the teacher should wait for the student's understanding to take over. Once understanding has been awakened in the student, that understanding does the teacher's work for him.
The mere possession of knowledge, intellectual knowledge, let's say of spiritual principles, cannot make a person better but it might tempt him to become a phony hypocrite. Superficially, you might do the right thing as the result of having such knowledge but you won't feel right about being right. Deep down you will be aware that this "learned behavior" is just a facade. You won't be able to stand your own phony-ness. You not only deceive others but you will also hurt yourself.
