BE STILL AND KNOW
Introduction to JUDEO-CHRISTIAN MEDITATION
Awareness
is a favorite subject of mine for reasons I hope you will presently see. True
awareness, you see, is the very key to life.
One
may have either a diminishing awareness or an increasing one, and, as I have
already pointed out, a diminishing awareness may resemble an increasing one as
we get lost in the make-believe world of imagination.
Losing
yourself in ideas and images tends to educate your ego in what it wants to
realize about itself. So image building is a form of self-deception, a means of
forgetting where you have failed. A creeping delusion of expanding conscious
awareness is the main reason behind all depression, conflicts, fears, and
guilts.
Once
the mind-game journey away from the Light begins, shame follows, and so you are
forced to burrow deeper down into the dark, illusory world of intellectual
escape. Beneath that superficial, mental fantasy there lurks a nightmarish
world of reality that opens as we burrow downward, away from the light like
spiritual gophers trying to get away, even from the truth of that!
The
ego principle of pride is this: As long as you are not aware of what is wrong,
you think you are right, and once the fixation to thought is established as a
way of dealing with Reality, it will carry you to absurd extremes.
Just
how aware are you this moment? Become conscious of what I am trying to convey
to you without trying to remember the exact words. Become conscious of
yourself, of the here and now, as these words pass by the grandstand of your
observation.
Awareness
of here and now is an eternal quality. If you could become progressively aware,
you would become alive in an eternal way.
Dying
is opposite to becoming aware, and death is the ultimate loss of the
consciousness of life. Surely if I hit you on the head you are closer to death.
