DOCTORS, DISEASE, AND DEATH:
THE CONSPIRACY TO KEEP YOU SICK
HOW THE NAKED APE BECAME
HUMAN
Many of us are not really
sick - our "trouble" is we have accepted that something is wrong with
us. However, I mean to imply much more
than the usual medical or psychological brush-off.
That is, some of us are
trying to live like the rest of the world, but we can't quite make it. The enormous pressure of observing so many
people living licentiously, pretentiously, vicariously, emotionally,
ambitiously, greedily, intellectually and excusingly, tends to make us doubt
"our" own true set of values.
This is because we are already responding emotionally and guiltily, but
we identify the guilt with the true values we have deserted by responding.
In other words, we now
feel dishonest with ourselves and superior to our "friends" only
because we have not yet acted as they.
Telling ourselves that we do not wish to be superior to our colleagues,
we magnanimously stoop to their level so "they" will feel
comfortable. "Good-naturedly"
we begin to agree with (love) them; and then we find we have made a
mistake. Now we are stuck half in this
world and half out. Their pressure still makes us feel guilty, so to ease the
guilt we again oblige. Obviously this
is the wrong way to ease guilt, but we don't know how to be right without
feeling wrong about it.
Once you begin responding
and competing emotionally, angrily, proudly and ambitiously, your mind and
development is referred to the source of stimuli. Now, even though you desire to live as you
know (come to realize through error) is right in your heart, you can't. What is more, you may even give yourself the
same line of excuses.
