The human consciousness provides a
battleground for the war between the spirit of the intellect and the spirit of
understanding.
Whenever
you begin to feel panicky, the chances are that you are making one of two
common mistakes: 1) You are listening to and believing, your own thoughts and
sinking into them so deeply that you have closed the door on all possibility of
intuitive enlightenment or 2) You are analyzing principles you have learned
from other people and you are attempting to apply them to your own situation,
where they simply do not apply.
Either
way, you are suffering from an overactive intellect trying to
"reason" your way out of the doubt and fear that you would never have
known had you not, at some point, reacted to someone or something with
resentment. Most of us, if not all of us, have come into the world with pride
as our birthright and we have met any challenge to our fancied "god-ship"
with resentment (“How dare she snatch away my toy!”, “Who does he think he is?”,
“Why don't they all shut up when they see I want to talk?”) As our "authority"
continues to be challenged our resentment grows and so does our doubt. We see
that something has gone wrong. We are not getting the respect we deserve and
we are uncomfortable.
Now
it is the way we react to our discomfort that separates the sheep from the
goats, the "godly" from the wicked. The decent sort of person senses
that he has somehow managed to separate himself from the true ground of his
being. He has been led into temptation, away from the true faith that he longs
to experience. He is the student for whom the teacher will appear when he is
ready to know truth. For him there is hope of salvation. The wicked one, on the
other hand, seizes on doubt as a challenge to his intellect. He delights in his
ability to weave intricate webs of words in which to trap the unwary. The
confidence he exudes is not born of faith but of the satisfaction he derives
from destroying the faith of others and making them doubt themselves.
