VOL. 54, January 29, 1969BEING BORN IN SIN:WHAT DOES THIS REALLY MEAN?
Animals cannot be wrong because they have no chance to be anything other than what they are. A star cannot be a bad star any more than its components. An atom cannot be faulty - there is no choice in favor of deviation from its prescribed course. The universe would be in a chaotic state were the substance of matter allowed independent self-will. Fault in nature would become like an error in mathematics; it would grow more complex, further from the source.
If we are evolving, there is nothing for us to improve, there is no need for self-determination, there can be no error - the race will improve of itself without any effort on our part. Can your ego accept the idea of higher beings emerging from you without your being responsible for their creation? Perhaps you do pride yourself on being responsible for your children's development. That would put you in about the same position with your offspring and the people of the future as monkeys were to us. Can't monkeys take pride and credit for what we are? If we can take credit for a future super-race, surely we must give all the credit to the monkeys for what we are now. And if the race is improving from generation to generation, how can you blame anyone for their "bad" influence upon you? Besides, you cannot have a problem under this system - yet your plight testifies to the contrary.
Do we ever need to exercise mind over body? Are we to accept the notion that we are risen beasts evolving to perfection? What then is needed to give that finishing touch, now? When will we ever be complete - and what is it that can make us whole? Can you bear the thought of super-beings of 2501 looking back (down) upon their humanoid forebears with affection, just as we now look back at our chimpanzees?
