PAIN: CAUSE AND RELIEF
(DISEASE) PAIN: A STRESS-FACTOR
Pain is one of the most important assets
that we can possibly possess. If we did not have the sensation of pain, we
would have no warning of danger. We
would pick up burning objects, and hurt ourselves without being aware. We could not progress very far in life
without this "sensation" of pain.
Yet, often we see people in agonies of
pain, whereby this sensation becomes, or "appears" to become - a
threat, rather than an ally. Many times, pain seems quite "needless"
and "bothersome”. Why should we
suffer so much pain, often without due cause?
How many people do you see lining the walls of doctors' offices, with
nothing really wrong with them, physically or mentally, yet appearing to suffer
Have you any idea of how many tons of
aspirin, and other pain-easers are sold in this country daily? It is difficult to "relieve yourself"
of the sensation of pain; indeed, it is most unwise to try; for the "home-application"
of pain-easers, as a rule, has two very dangerous effects.
First, it takes more and more medication to
get less and less "relief"; until you are almost ready to "climb
the walls" when the pain easers eventually lose their effectiveness. The reason for this is not only because the
body builds a "resistance" to the medication; but also because the
problem itself is growing worse, through the lack of proper treatment or
attention. Medical scientists, clever
though they might be, often cannot explain this seemingly-simple problem.
The other effect is that we can live on
pain-killers, thereby dulling our senses to the point where we might bang into
objects and have all sorts of accidents, through our dulled-pain
perception. Even more evil results than
this follow, however; for people who succeed in living in a world without
"discomfort" are dulled spiritually, as well as physically. Some people prefer the pain to the pill,
subconsciously perceiving the "evil" of the "medication”.
Pain has a tremendous value, both physically
and metaphysically speaking; for we are caused to come to the conclusion that
we must be at fault for this pnin which comes through "experience”.
You see, pain does not hurt us only on a
physical level. There are many
"forms" of suffering - far worse than "physical" pain. For example, the mental "anguish"
of seeing your child hurt, is far worse. "Guilt-feelings" are more
agonizing than physical suffering. Indeed, many people seek physical pain, in
order to distract themselves from mental agony of guilt. Inner unhappiness and confusion are also
types of pain. If you gave some people
the choice of great physical suffering, or seeing harm come to a loved one,
they would definitely choose the physical "pain" to the mental. Mental "anguish”, or
"anxiety" like this, is a kind of spiritual "pain" that can
manifest itself into an equivalent physical dis-order, as well. For, "As a
man thinketh in his heart, so is he”.
